Mexican Land Grants

In Alta California there were approximately 900 grants during the Mexican period. These were made mostly prior to 1846. The grants had indefinite boundaries which created very serious problems for the Californios when the United States took over. An example is Rancho Potrero de San Luis Obispo which consists today of Cal Poly and part of San Luis Obispo. Jose Canuto Boronda received this grant in 1842 or 1843 from Governor Alvarado. His daughter Maria Concepcion Boronda finally received the patent in 1870. The grant was approximately 3506 acres
